The Recall of MPs Bill, which came to the Lords in December, has been widely criticised by peers on both sides of the House. It prescribes the circumstances in which ‘serious wrongdoing’ by an MP would enable his or her electors to seek a by-election. At the Committee stage of the Bill in January Alistair Lexden joined a cross-party group in an effort to improve it through constructive amendments.

On February 10, when the Bill reached its report stage—the penultimate stage in its passage through the House—the group brought forward further amendments designed to make the process of recall as simple and straightforward as possible for the benefit of electors. Ministers were asked to think again before the Bill completes its passage.
