This year is the Hansard Society’s 70th anniversary. It was founded during the final phase of the Second World War by a popular and influential independent MP, Sir Stephen King-Hall. Its extensive programme of work has two central themes: promoting political education and strengthening parliamentary institutions (details can be found on its website).

Alistair Lexden, a Trustee of the Society, instigated a short discussion of some of the many issues with which the Society is involved by means of an oral question in the Lords on October 16.

He emphasised in particular the importance of one of the Society’s flagship publications , its Audit of Political Engagement, which provides an annual ‘ health check’ on public attitudes to our democratic institutions. Follow the link to the exchanges in the Lords.
