At oral question time in the Lords on 13 September, Alistair Lexden returned to a serious issue about which he has been greatly concerned since the beginning of last year—namely, the failure of the police in London and elsewhere to observe the standards expected of them during investigations of allegations of child sexual abuse in the past. Some very serious mistakes were made which have been widely reported and discussed. An independent inquiry last year severely criticised the Metropolitan Police. The Wiltshire Police have been strongly condemned for the way they investigated ludicrous allegations against Ted Heath.

In his question on 13 September, Alistair Lexden asked the government how it proposed to ensure that the police stop their bad practices. He was not satisfied with the answers that were given and plans to return to the matter again in due course.
