Since 1908 governments of all political persuasions have commissioned official histories of individual ministries and departments, the conduct of wars and other activities of the state. The future of this important programme of publications is now in jeopardy. In a debate in the Lords Grand Committee chamber on December 10, Alistair Lexden argued strongly that the programme should be retained.
