Parliament passes into law several thousand measures, known as statutory instruments or Orders in Council, each year. Many of them deal with technical, often rather abstruse matters.

It is important nevertheless that they are scrutinised thoroughly so that errors are spotted and corrected. Alistair Lexden drew attention to this vital work in which the Lords is heavily engaged during a short debate on the Building Societies (Floating Charges and Other Provisions) Order 2016 which took place on June 6.

Though the points he raised were of a specialised nature, they provide an example of valuable Parliamentary activity that often goes unnoticed. F
