At the start of the 20th century there were some 200 London Clubs, mainly in the area between Pall Mall and Piccadilly. Around 20 were explicitly political in character, supporting either the Conservative or Liberal Parties. On January 22, BBC 2’s Daily Politics programme included a discussion of the role and significance of these Clubs in British political history.

Alistair Lexden contributed comments on the Carlton Club, the oldest and most important of them. Follow the link to watch his comments: BBC iPlayer
