The High Price of Devolution

England and Wales have a new libel law which cuts costs for ordinary defendants and protects press freedom more effectively. Northern Ireland has been deprived of these benefits by the devolved Northern Ireland Executive.

Alistair Lexden highlighted this sorry state of affairs in an oral question in the Lords on 0ctober 14. The government’s response was wholly inadequate.

Why should people in one part of the country be denied rights that are enjoyed elsewhere (same-sex marriage is another example)? Alistair Lexden will be raising this fundamental issue in the Lords in a few weeks’ time.
