Many servicemen and women posted abroad are effectively disenfranchised because of the cumbersome requirements that have to be met in order to register to vote and cast a ballot.

Alistair Lexden is a patron of the new Institute for Digital Democracy, led by a dynamic youth team. A report published by the Institute on I August put forward a series of recommendations to tackle the problems faced by our service personnel abroad. They include the introduction of online voting on a trial basis.

In a foreword to the report, Alistair Lexden said: “ We must explore the possibilities of new technology and learn how best we can harness them for the good of our democratic process in order to include these often forgotten voters”.
