In March 1924, the first Labour Government was in office. Winston Churchill, then a Liberal, had been defeated at the last two general elections. He was desperate to find a way of getting back into the House of Commons. A by-election occurred unexpectedly in the Westminster Abbey parliamentary constituency.
Churchill hoped it would enable him to revive his parliamentary career. Alistair Lexden tells the story of this remarkable contest in the attached article, which was published in Parliament’s magazine The House on 25 March.
This was his 100th conribution to The House magazine.
